No trip here would be complete without spending time on the beautiful, clear-blue shimmering lake! Even in the off season we saw crew boats, sail boats and water skiers (much to our jealousy) enjoying this huge lake. Lac Léman is one of the largest bodies of fresh water in Europe and is bordered by Switzerland and France. One can easily hop on in the major cities to cross between the countries and across the lake (Geneva to Lausanne takes over three hours). Using the Swiss Travel Pass we were able to freely board the antique boats that travel between Montreaux and the Swiss Riviera. These pre-First World War boats are beautifully maintained with teak decking and divided into two classes, with the upper 1st class offering full menus and champagne (yes!) on linens, and lounge chairs. Built in 1904, the Montreux is the oldest boat in regular operation while La Suisse, built in 1910, is known as the most elegant. Depending on your pickup/drop off locations, you can view the Château de Chillon and the Lavaux vineyards.
